What Do Belts Mean in Jiu-Jitsu?
In BJJ, belts are more than just colors around your waist. Each belt represents a stage of growth, dedication, and learning.
They reflect technical progress but also the core values of Jiu-Jitsu: discipline, resilience, and respect.
Belts for Adults
For adults, there are fewer belt colors—but the journey is longer and more demanding:
- White: the starting point. Basics, discipline, and defense.
- Blue: building confidence and understanding key positions and techniques.
- Purple: deeper knowledge; this is where students start to develop their own style.
- Brown: technical maturity and refinement, with attention to details.
- Black: excellence. Not the end of the journey, but the start of a lifetime of deeper learning.
👉 Average timeline:
- Blue: 1–2 years
- Purple: 3–4 years after blue
- Brown: 1–2 years after purple
- Black: around 8–10 years of consistent training
More Than Colors: Personal Growth
Each belt is earned with sweat, discipline, and respect. The belt you wear isn’t just about skill—it’s about the story you’re writing on the mat.
